Moving the focus from individual bigotry and bias, the REI Phase 1 workshop presents a historical, cultural, structural and institutional analysis. REI believes that organizations often work for equity with multiple understandings of racism that rely more on personal feelings and popular opinion.

  • Lunch will be served on both days of the workshop—we will try to cater to different dietary needs, but we cannot guarantee that we can accommodate everyone.

  • We ask that participants stay the whole time for the two days as each piece of the workshop builds on one another.

  • Participants will receive an electronic workbook including outlines of the workshop material and a selected bibliography.

  • Upon completion of their Phase I workshop, participants are invited to return to any REI Phase I workshop open to the public at no cost.

  • Additional information about workshop logistics—including location, parking instructions, etc.—will be sent to all workshop registrants when the information is available and as a reminder after the workshop.

  • In the unlikely event that we do not have enough participants for this workshop, we may need to postpone the workshop to a later date.

  • For any questions, please contact Reiney Lin at
